How long should a blog post be? Or, to put it technically: how many words should an article have? The truth is, there\u2019s no single right answer. Both short and long posts can deliver results\u2014it all depends on what you want to achieve.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion about short versus long-form content has made a comeback. And it\u2019s not just online, some fascinating trends are also appearing in print media. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.briefideas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Journal of Brief Ideas<\/a>, for example. This is an academic journal (normally the go-to place for lengthy research papers) where scientists can only publish contributions of up to 200 words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScientists often spend months writing a single research article,\u201d editor-in-chief David Harris told Nature, \u201cyet they have many more valuable ideas that never get developed. The goal is to make those ideas public.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the other end of the spectrum, the Belgian newspaper De Standaard launched De Correspondenten. Seven journalists get the time and space to dig deep into a single subject, producing long articles, often the equivalent of three newspaper pages. These pieces also appear online for subscribers, without being shortened for digital reading.<em> (201 words)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-longer-blog-posts-can-be-valuable\"><strong>Why longer blog posts can be valuable&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, De Standaard is a news brand, not a company blog. But if a newspaper believes that high-quality, in-depth content can keep readers engaged to the very last line, that\u2019s worth noting for businesses investing in quality content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first part of the answer to \u201cwhat\u2019s the ideal length for a blog post?\u201d is therefore: long-form can work. By \u201clong\u201d, we mean 1,000 words or more. In print terms, that\u2019s roughly two A4 magazine pages. This is manageable on the sofa, perhaps less so on a screen. Unless, of course, the quality is high enough. And Google rewards that quality, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnrampton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Rampton<\/a> explained on Forbes: \u201cGooglebot looks at every piece of content on a page: words, titles, or any other information you share. A post with 1,500 words offers more flexibility with keywords, so you\u2019re not limited to one or two specific ones. You can integrate multiple, less specific keywords that still remain relevant to your topic. This works because Google doesn\u2019t return exact matches; it delivers results that are relevant to a subject.\u201d <em>(385 words)&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-shorter-blog-posts-can-be-valuable\"><strong>Why shorter blog posts can be valuable&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes, Google likes long blog posts, but that doesn\u2019t mean short ones are automatically a bad idea. Author <a href=\"https:\/\/seths.blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seth Godin<\/a> has built his reputation on short, powerful posts. Beyond quality, short posts also come with the advantage that your audience is far more likely to read them in full, time after time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach can even become a kind of format. You create an expectation, not just for when your posts appear, but also for their style and length. And the day Seth Godin does publish a longer post, it will be read. But most readers return for \u201ctheir\u201d short piece.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Short posts can also work beautifully alongside a strong call-to-action strategy. A blog post can briefly spark interest, while other content formats\u2014such as an eBook or a webinar \u2014can explore the topic in more depth. You can then offer that in exchange for the reader\u2019s contact details, turning curiosity into a lead. <em>(549 words)&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"there-is-no-universal-ideal-length\"><strong>There is no universal ideal length&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, does size not matter? Actually, it does. While both short and long blog posts can be justified, your content goals should guide you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your focus is search visibility, longer posts (800\u20131,000 words or more) generally perform better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you already have strong visibility and your aim is to convert readers into leads, a shorter post (around 500 words) can be more effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your goals are mixed, there\u2019s nothing wrong with finding a middle ground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But length alone won\u2019t make your blog successful.
