Podcast: Authenticity in the age of influencers (with social media creator Chelsea)
In a world where authenticity is often overshadowed by polished perfection, Chelsea’s journey from a corporate brand lead to a full-time content creator is a refreshing tale of staying true to oneself. Her story is not just about career transition but about embracing one’s identity and passions.
The corporate beginning
Chelsea’s career began in the structured world of marketing and communication. With a role at McDonald’s, she was responsible for national campaigns, focusing on Gen Z strategies and social media. However, the creative constraints of corporate life led her to explore personal branding on social media.
“I always knew I wanted to do something within marketing, within communicating with others. And that’s how I started first my roles within sales. And then I transitioned actually to McDonald’s and there I was brand lead,” Chelsea shares.
Building a personal brand
While juggling a nine-to-five job, Chelsea started building her personal brand. Her content, a blend of corporate life and personal interests, resonated with audiences. This duality – being a “corporate girly” and a content creator – allowed her to connect authentically with her followers.
“I actually decided: why don’t I try for myself to build a personal brand on social media? And I did that while working a corporate nine to five job,” she explains.
The leap of faith
A few months ago, Chelsea took a bold step, leaving the corporate world to become a full-time content creator. Supported by her partner and friends, she embraced the uncertainty of this new path, driven by the potential she saw in her growing social media presence.
“The biggest support in my life now is my partner. He doesn’t have a marketing background. He does not have a social media background at all. But he was like, if you want to do this for yourself, it is now or never. Or you will climb the corporate ladder and there you will find fulfillment or you will grow your own brand and there you can be your own boss,” her partner encouraged.
Navigating the content creator world
Chelsea’s success lies in her authenticity. She collaborates only with brands that align with her values, ensuring her content remains genuine. Her approach to negative comments is rational, focusing on constructive feedback and ignoring baseless negativity.
“For me, how do I make the money? It’s really because I am 100% fully myself on social media and I only work with brands that are authentic to me,” she emphasizes.
The future of influencing
Chelsea believes in long-term brand ambassadorship, where genuine connections between influencers and brands lead to greater impact. Her advice to aspiring content creators is simple: be true to yourself, stay persistent, and focus on your unique journey.
“I think it’s just important to stay true to yourself. Stay relatable and just keep on posting why other people are following you,” she advises.
Chelsea’s story is a testament to the power of authenticity in a world of curated content. Her journey inspires others to embrace their true selves and pursue their passions, no matter how unconventional the path may seem.
